Fix the Ick's; Bedroom Edition

Is your bedroom a nightmare? Follow our plan to fix the ick's with our Free Guide!

Hi! I’m Nicole, coming to you from Sacramento, California. Earlier this year, I quit my 9-to-5 to pursue my passion: helping my neighbors, friends, and community create spaces they love on budgets they can actually afford.

We all deserve a space we love, on a budget we can actually afford. But let’s be real—knowing where, when, or how to start can feel impossible. The internet is flooded with recycled advice, endless affiliate links, and design programs with jaw-dropping price tags.

That’s why I’m here. Everyone should have access to design knowledge, simple tools, and extra support if needed—no gatekeeping allowed in 2025! Especially when Tik-Chat creators (is that even a thing yet?) are about to flood Instagram. Don't get me wrong- I love IG. But I'm starting to really see the value in YouTube and video playlists for organization!

Your Bedroom Matters

Does your bedroom feel like the calm, cozy retreat it should be? Have you ever thought about how much this one space impacts your life? Sleep, relaxation, relationships—it all starts here. It's where you start and end almost every day of your life.

So, stop binging HGTV and follow a plan to fix your “icks.” With New Year’s just around the corner, now is the perfect time to make your bedroom a priority. Let’s create a space that’s warm, cozy, and feels like you on a budget you can afford.

Start with Style

Before starting any project, take a moment to define your style. After all, how can you decide what to buy or plan for if you’re unsure of what truly resonates with you?

You’re not alone if you feel stuck here—most people I work with are completely overwhelmed by style. That’s why I created tools like my 100 Years of Design guide. It breaks down trends from each decade and helps you find what YOU truly love.

Here’s the secret: no one loves just one style, and that’s perfectly okay! Learning how to blend styles is the key to creating spaces that feel cohesive and uniquely yours.

My Story

A year ago, I moved out of my dream home and into a new house with my fiancé, our three kids, and three cats. It was a huge change, but we’re making this house feel like home, one project at a time.

Over the past year, we’ve tackled most of the master bedroom, fixing one “ick” at a time, all on a budget and timeline we could handle. When it comes to home projects, it’s all about balance—following a plan while staying flexible when things shift (because they will, whether it’s a goal date or a budget adjustment).

The key? Take the pressure off. Creating a home becomes so much more fun and enjoyable when you let go of perfection and embrace the process.

The Fixes We Made in 2024

1. Installed a ceiling fan (because Sacramento summers are no joke).

2. Added a leather reclining chair for reading which has become our #1 laundry chair.

3. Chose a large area rug to anchor the space and add color.

4. Upgraded to automatic roller shades from Rico’s Window Coverings & Films

5. Picked up an MCM dresser from Article and took over all 6 drawers.

6. DIY’d a slatted accent wall inspired by our travels to Japan and add a warm wood tone to the space.

7. Stacked two oversized smokey mirrors across from the window to help bounce more light into the room.

9. Hung art from our travels for a personal and romantic touch.

10. Brought in local plants for life and freshness.

11. Added bed side lighting I thrifted, and a tall Japanese floor lamp. And of course, added Govee bulbs so we could easily control the mood.

The last steps? Dressing the windows (I bought the rod but still need to find the perfect patterned drapes) and finally painting the room. I can't wait to pick out some paint samples and try them this spring.

Pro Tip: Always Paint Last!

Paint is the ultimate finishing touch, but it’s also the easiest thing to get wrong. Wait until your furniture and decor are in place before choosing a color to ensure it all works together. Look to the rug, or artwork in the space if you need color inspiration. Or, have fun building a color palette.

Save yourself the stress and use free apps to preview colors in your space with your actual items. Trust me, painting last is a game-changer.
